Spider-Man Review by Winnie Huang

Directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, and Willem Dafoe, 'Spiderman' was one of the very first successful films by Sony. Based on comic book hero 'Spider-Man'. This movie retells the origins of Spider-Man, a nerdy school kid named Peter Parker (Played by Tobey Maguire) turns into a superhero after being bitten by a radioactive spider. With increased strength, agility, sense perception, not to mention the ability to climb walls and shoot webs. Spider-Man takes on the evil villain Green-Goblin (played by Willem Dafoe).

As a comic book fan and a huge spidey fan, this film has to be one of my favourites. I grew up watching this film at a very young age, and to me this movie was amazing. Let me just point out that this movie did have a ton of mistakes, not to mention the cheesiness. But for it’s time this movie was probably the best superhero movie out there. For many reasons, mainly because at the time there were no other better superhero movie, besides maybe 'X-Men'. This was before 'The Dark Knight' series, or 'The Avengers'. Even though It was really successful back then but, if this film came out today it probably wouldn’t do as well.

Lets talk about the acting. I know, I know Tobey Maguire’s acting obviously was not the best, but for the movie it was alright. He definitely tried his best and really brought his own style into the Peter Parker, despite all the cheesy lines… and maybe the crying. I personally blame the writers for the cheesiness of Spider-Man/ Peter Parker in this film, and not Tobey. Overall Tobey did an alright job playing the awkward, antisocial, but yet heroic and funny Spidey/Peter Parker.

Willem Dafoe totally nailed the role of Norman Osborn/Green Goblin. His creepiness and his smile really captured a great Norman Osborn. But Green Goblin as a character I think was written poorly in this movie, his purposes and not to mention the cheesy lines.

J.K Simmons was probably my favorite in this movie, he was perfect for the role as J. Jonah Jameson. His character was hilarious, and I think the writers did an excellent job with him. They really captured that iconic and memorable J. Jonah Jameson that everyone loves.

Overall, I think this was a great film, it definitely iconizes the origins of the web slinger in a light-hearted and fun way.  Despite all the bad things said about this movie, it was memorable and really loved by the audience. I wouldn’t go as far as saying that this movie is way better than the new 'The Amazing Spider-Man', but for 2002 it was great. Without it, superhero movies wouldn’t be the same as they are today. I definitely recommend this to those who have not watched it yet.

Score: 8.8/10
