(500) Days of Summer Review by Ammar Akhtar

(500) Days of Summer stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zooey Deschanel, Geoffrey Arend, Chloe Grace Moretz, Matthew Gray Gubler and Clark Gregg. IMDb synopsis: An offbeat romantic comedy about a woman who doesn't believe true love exists, and the young man who falls for her.

I don’t usually enjoy romance movies. Films like The Notebook are not ones I like. I like films that are different than what you would expect. They may seem cliche, but they are not. It’s simply much more than that. This how I felt about (500) Days of Summer:

What this film does so well is that it breaks apart from the whole romance genre. It’s very creative and unique. In romance movies, I think we see more emotions from the girl rather than the guy. In this film however, it’s in the perspective of the guy. We see his emotions and his views on love. What’s also different is that the girl, Summer, does not believe in true love. This is odd because usually the typical girl would believe in this. Tom, who is the main character, believes in true love. These nice twists made the film completely different from other romance movies.

There was one scene in the movie which I just loved. It’s called expectations versus reality. Basically, it shows what would really happen if this relationship was real. This is what the film captures so well. The relationship just feels so realistic. It doesn’t feel fake in any way. This scene really helped the movie feel so real.

Another way the film is so different is with nonlinear storytelling. It means that the story isn’t told in order. We see different days of their relationship. One day there relationship would be fine, but the next would not be so good. As more days go on, we slowly see Summer and Tom drifting apart. This was a great choice. Films usually are linear, but not following that makes the film even more unique.

Overall, I loved this film. It’s much more than the average romance movie. It tells us the views of true love in today’s standards. Everything about it was great. I was hooked from start to finish, and I think you will be too.

MY SCORE: 9.5/10
