The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 Review by Ammar Akhtar

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 stars Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Julianne Moore. It's directed by Francis Lawrence. Mockingjay picks up right after it's predecessor. We are now in district 13, and a rebellion group has formed against the capitol. Katniss helps them to rebel, but is still very upset because of the fact that Peeta is not with her. He is at the capitol where he is being held hostage, and Katniss attempts to save him.

Mockingjay is in a bit of an odd situation. Since it's a teen book and it's a trend nowadays, the book is being split into 2 parts. After seeing part 1, I can definitely tell why they made 2 parts: money.

Something good about the film is it's ideas about society. An ongoing theme in this series is that some people are just unfair. We need some heroes to face them, and possibly end them. It explores this major theme very well, and it's illuminated brightly in this film.

That being said, this film suffers from a lot of problems, and one of them is being a "part 1".  I'm not one in favor of 2 part films just because the first part is something you can ignore, and this movie supports my opinion perfectly. There were a lot of scenes that were very boring and dragged the movie along. It wasn't interesting at all. I think one of the main reasons that a lot of scenes were like this was due to the fact that it was a first part movie. You see, they are probably waiting for the second movie to put all of the intense, explosion fest scenes. This movie ultimately was like a trailer for the next one. There's really not much to it.

Another problem was that the characters were not very well developed. Katniss didn't really grow as a character in this movie. She was the same person she was at the end of Catching Fire. The problems she faced didn't impact her very much. Along with that, we are introduced to a bunch of new characters who didn't really need to be there. One example of this would be the character Boggs. He's like a security guard, and his only job is to protect Katniss. There wasn't really much emotion between the two characters, and plenty of others were looking out for her. Boggs wasn't needed at all.

Overall, this wasn't the film I wanted. This was definitely a step down from the second movie. Since it's only a "part 1", there's not much going on. It was very slow and boring due to this reason. The characters were not very developed either. Everyone had no change towards the end of the movie. They all didn't face a problem that would force them to change. For these reasons, I left the theater disappointed.

MY SCORE: 6.5/10
