'Black Mass' Review by Ammar Akhtar

Black Mass stars Johnny Depp, Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Dakota Johnson, and Kevin Bacon. It's directed by Scott Cooper. 'Black Mass' tells the true story of Whitey Bulger, one of the most violent criminals ever, who became partnered with the FBI to take down a mafia gang that opposed him.

I was looking forward to 'Black Mass'. The trailers made it seem like it was going to be a memorable gangster movie, and it also seemed like Johnny Depp's big return after his numerous failures these past few years ('Transcendence', 'Mordecai'). While this may be one of Depp's best performances, the movie itself doesn't really hold up that well.

On a positive note, this is probably one of Depp's best performances in a while. As mentioned before, he's had a string of horrendous movies for the past few years, so it's very refreshing to see him actually do something great again. Everyone else does a satisfactory job, but Depp definitely stole most of his scenes. There were a couple of scenes that just blew me away because he was so great!

Other than that, I really didn't find anything good about the movie. One of the biggest problems I had was that it was VERY slow, to a point where I just didn't care about the movie anymore. Stuff happened, people died, and it didn't really add anything. However, the first act was probably the best part. I was intrigued by the way it was going, but it slowly just lost my interest as it went on.

Another reason I think this movie fails is it's characters. They're one of the key factors to make a movie great in my opinion, and this movie failed to accomplish that. Each character was so twisted and dark that it's hard to root for them. Even though it's cool to see Depp's character Whitey Bulger choke someone to death with a rope, he's still a sick, evil man. A movie needs some type of protagonist to make it more entertaining, but I didn't see that in 'Black Mass'.

As a whole, I'd say this is a performance-driven movie. There's nothing special about it's story or characters, but Johnny Depp's acting performance saved it. I found it very entertain to watch him, but the rest of the movie seemed like a boring, pessimistic waste of time.

MY SCORE: 5.5/10
