Useful Tools for the DIY Filmmaker by Aidan Ryan

This list is a compilation of useful peripheral tools for the DIY Filmmaker, and does not include essentials. I am not being paid by these companies, these products are just really good!

  • Magic Bullet Looks by Red Giant - $399

This color correction plugin for your NLE is simple and efficient, as well as extremely elegant. Uses range from Hollywood level color correction to DIY shorts. Who would have thought color correction could have been this easy?

  •  Tascam DR 60D with Rode NTG-2 Shotgun Mic and Boompole Kit - $659.04

This field recorder package from B&H Photo Video is the complete package for external audio recording. It includes the recorder, cables, microphone, microphone mount, boompole, SD card, and batteries so that you don’t have to shop around. These components are also available for purchase separately.

  • Pearstone Acrylic Dry Erase Clapboard - $44.95

This clapboard does what it is supposed to do: it allows you to sync up your video and audio quickly and easily.

  • Square Perfect 10’x20’ Greenscreen - $37.46

This greenscreen is perfect for video, and is cheap enough that you don’t have to put it on layaway! There are also smaller versions if the 10'X20' version is too large.

  • Clip Can/Work Light - $8.47

This light is perfect for lighting your scenes, just fill it with your bulb of choice and clip to to a speaker stand, table, or anything that is from the angle you need, and your scene is lit!

  • Filmic Pro for iOS - $4.99

Without a doubt, this is the best app for the DIY Filmmaker. I discovered this through Triune Films' Film Riot, and I am ever so glad I did! This enables you to set your recording resolution, frame rate, recording quality, not to mention allowing you to lock white balance, focus, and exposure. As I am working on no budget, I simply use this when I cannot borrow a friend's DSLR. Supposedly an Android version is in the works.
