Many movies become instant hits, but some have managed to cross the billion mark. The ones who do are entered into the billion dollar club. According to BoxOfficeMojo, 19 movies in total have made more than a billion dollars worldwide. Which movie will be next to join the billion dollar club in 2014?
As of August 5th 2014, only one movie has managed to pass this mark: Transformers: Age of Extinction.
This comes as no surprise, considering the fact that it was the only summer movie so far to pass the $100 million mark. Also, the Transformers franchise has been widely popular since it has started. Although all of them have received negative reviews, including this one, they all still manage to make a ton of cash.
What Can Pass A Billion Dollars?
#1: Guardians of the Galaxy
Guardians of the Galaxy has already made $94 million in its first weekend, blowing past projected estimates. It’s also broken the record for the biggest opening weekend for a movie in August. Based on its great success, this film has a good chance of passing a billion. Even if it does not, it is a great addition for Marvel in their cinematic universe. They can become as popular as the Avengers heroes.
How Likely is it To Pass A Billion? Likely
Interstellar is Christopher Nolan’s new film. Based on it’s trailers, this seems to be a great movie, but can it pass a billion? It has a slight chance due to Nolan’s fans, but only his batman flicks have passed a billion. Inception only grossed $825 million, which was not based on any popular source material. Also, it is not being released in 3D. These tickets cost more than a regular one and makes a great money-maker. Since not being released in 3D, Interstellar will need to heavly rely on its IMAX tickets. Overall, I think this film will make a ton of money at the box office, but has slim chances at reaching a billion.
How Likely is it To Pass A Billion? Not Likely.
#3: Big Hero 6
The new Disney movie is sure to be hit with kids, but I think crossing a billion is a long shot. Frozen was a gigantic success for Disney, so not doing a princess movie could hurt them. This seems to go along the lines of Wreck-It Ralph. While it did not make a billion, it was close to $500 million, which is still a hit. Either way, Disney has made another film which will be great.
How Likely To Pass A Billion? Not Likely.
#4: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1
The continuation of the popular book series is sure to be a big hit and has great chances of passing a billion. It has a popular fanbase who are very loyal to both the books and movies. Also, I think Jennifer Lawrence is a popular figure these days with teens. With her funny personality, young adults adore her a lot and will go see her in this movie. Overall, I think this will reach a billion due to a fanbase still growing and fans of Jennifer Lawrence.
How Likely To Pass A Billion? Very Likely.
#5: The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
This film is the last of the Middle-Earth saga, and has a chance at reaching a billion. Due to a very strong fanbase for a long time, lovers of LOTR series will want to see possibly the last Middle-Earth movie ever (unless they do a Salmirillion movie). The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey did cross a billion, but The Desolation of Smaug did not. I think this is because of the mixed reviews the first one received. Even though the second one was a major improvement, the disappointment of the first and the length of the second probably decreased the amount of money made by The Desolation of Smaug. Overall, due to it being the last of its kind, this has a chance of passing a billion.
How Likely To Pass A Billion? Likely.
These are the five contenders who do have a chance of passing a billion. Of course, there could be surprise hits, but these also may not pass a billion. The summer movie season sales have gone down quite a bit, so there may be a chance that there will only be one film to pass a billion, which is Transformers. Either way, we will have to find out and see.
